That means reading the fault history, checking the obvious things that account for most breakdowns, testing the component that the symptoms point to, and only then ordering or fitting a part. Emergency boiler repair
A boiler down in winter with young children, an elderly person or someone unwell in the house is treated as urgent. Say so on the form and the call back prioritises it. Before the visit, check the pressure gauge (below one bar and the boiler will not run), look for a fault code on the display, check that the gas is on and other gas appliances work, and try a single reset. If the outside condensate pipe is frozen, pouring warm water along it often restarts the boiler.
Do not keep resetting. Some boilers lock out permanently after repeated resets and the fault history that would have helped the diagnosis is lost.
Booking a diagnosis visit
The form asks for the make and model, the fault code if there is one, what the boiler is doing and not doing, and how old it is. That is enough to bring the right diagnostic kit and the common parts for that make on the first visit, which is how most repairs are finished in one go. The visit is priced on the call back; the repair is priced once the fault is found, before any part is fitted.
Common boiler faults and breakdown causes
- Low pressure. The gauge drops, the boiler stops. Usually a small leak on the system or a failed expansion vessel; occasionally the pressure relief valve passing. Topping up is not a repair.
- No hot water, heating fine (or the reverse). On a combi, the diverter valve or the plate heat exchanger, the latter scaled in Norfolk's hard water. On a system boiler, a motorised valve or the cylinder thermostat.
- Lockout on ignition. Ignition electrodes, the flame sensing lead, the gas valve, or a blocked condensate trap.
- Fan faults. A whining or grinding noise before failure, then a fan or air-pressure fault code.
- Kettling and banging. Scale or sludge on the heat exchanger; the boiler overheats locally and flashes water to steam.
- Pump faults. The boiler fires then trips on overheat because the water is not moving.
- Control faults. A thermostat, a wiring centre or a printed circuit board. The PCB is the part most often blamed and least often the actual cause.
The boiler repair process
The fault history is read from the boiler where it keeps one. The system pressure, gas supply, flue, condensate and electrical supply are checked, because a good share of "boiler faults" are none of those. The component the symptoms point to is then tested, not assumed: a fan is spun and its windings measured, a gas valve is checked for the signal and the response, a pressure switch is tested with the tube off. Only when the fault is confirmed is the part fitted. The boiler is then run through a full cycle, combustion checked, and the pressure and controls set.

My boiler pressure keeps dropping. Can I just keep topping it up?
You can for a short while, but the water is going somewhere. Either there is a leak on the system, or the expansion vessel has lost its charge and the relief valve is discharging outside. Both are simple to find and fix; topping up for months corrodes the system with fresh water.
Is it worth repairing a boiler over ten years old?
Often, yes, if the fault is a single component and parts are available. It is less worth it when the heat exchanger or gas valve has failed, or when it is the third repair in two winters. You get both figures and decide.
Do you carry parts on the van?
The common parts for the mainstream makes, yes, which is why the form asks for the make and model. Less common parts are ordered once the fault is confirmed and fitted on a return visit.
Why does the boiler work for heating but not hot water?
On a combi that is nearly always the diverter valve or a scaled plate heat exchanger. On a system boiler it is usually the cylinder thermostat or the motorised valve that sends water to the cylinder. All are diagnosed with a test, not a guess.
The boiler is making a banging noise. Is it dangerous?
Kettling is usually scale or sludge causing local overheating rather than a safety issue, but it does mean the boiler is straining and the cause should be dealt with. If there is any smell of gas or fumes, turn it off and treat it as an emergency.
Can a repair be done under the manufacturer's guarantee?
If the boiler is within its guarantee and has been serviced annually, a fault on the boiler itself is usually the manufacturer's to fix, and you are told to call them rather than pay twice. Faults on the system around the boiler are not covered by the boiler guarantee.
